Registering Your Car When It Arrives in Texas
You have a month to register your vehicle after arriving in the Lone Star State.
Step 1: Vehicle Inspection & Insurance
You need to first pass the vehicle inspection. This only applies to you if you’re from any of the following counties:

For inspection, any certified Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) inspection center should do.
As far as insurance is concerned, you need to show that you have insurance of:

Step 2: Vehicle Registration
You’ll need to take:
A valid insurance card
Proof of vehicle ownership
A filled copy of the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration
The registration fees are around $50.75, and an additional $1 for TexaSure and other DPS initiatives. If you’re a new resident, you’ll also be charged a sales tax-related fee of $90 to the state’s Comptroller of Public Accounts.
Fully electric cars and trucks, with a gross weight of 10,000 lbs or less, will be assessed an annual $200 fee at the time of registration. New electric vehicles issued 2 years of registration will be assessed a $400 fee.
Temporary Registration Options
Texas does not offer temporary registration for new residents moving temporarily. You have 30 days from the time you move here to register your vehicle in the state, regardless of the intended length of stay. However, county tax offices can provide temporary registration permits for specific situations during the registration process.
Special Provisions for Military Personnel
1. Active Duty Exemptions
If you’re a full-time student attending a university or college in Texas or if you’re active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces and non-resident, you don’t have to register or title your vehicle in the state.
2. Non-Resident Military Serving in Texas
If you are a Non-resident serving in Texas, you are allowed, but not required, to register your vehicle with your local county tax office, according to the TxDMV’s military services page.
3. Extended Timeline for Military Purchases
Active duty members of the military, including the National Guard and reserve units, have 60 calendar days from the date of Texas purchase or first use in Texas to transfer title and pay registration fees on the purchase of a used motor vehicle, as stated by the Texas Comptroller.
4. Military Registration While Out of State
To apply for title and/or registration while the vehicle is out-of-state, submit the following by mail to a county tax office in Texas, along with required documentation, including proof of active military service.
Step 3: Driver License Requirements
You’ll need a driver’s license within 90 days from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Most vehicle registration services are handled at county tax-assessor collector offices. County Tax Assessor-Collectors are authorized to process certain transactions on behalf of TxDMV at their locations.
